New Bell Time and Attendance Issues

Grades 1–5 now start at 8:30 a.m. We are hoping this will help reduce the number of tardies we had last year, especially in our upper grades. Our attendance goal is 98%, with a significant reduction in tardies. Our school lost significant state funding because of chronic truancy related to unexcused absences.

Scheduled absences (vacation, doctor appointment, funeral attendance, etc..) and illnesses are not considered unexcused. Please let the office know about scheduled appointments and vacations, and check with your child’s teacher for illness guidelines.

Sequoia is a bell-to-bell school; instruction begins with the morning bell and ends with the afternoon bell. Students who arrive late or leave early are missing first-time instruction and exposure to first-time content. Just 15 minutes a day tardy or leaving early, over the course of a school year, results in a week of lost instruction.

If you need support with attendance or tardies, please contact the school office; we have district resources to support you. Thank you for your cooperation. Here’s to a successful new year and great opportunities for learning!

With Warmest Regards, Donald T. Bertolo
